The baht is firming: Thailand's value window is narrowing
June 19, 2026
Thailand has been a value staple for so long that it's easy to assume it always will be. But the read moves. As the baht firms against a soft Hong Kong dollar, Thailand's real-feel cost is drifting up from the deep lows of recent years. This isn't a "don't go" β Thailand is still one of the most rewarding trips in Asia, and one of the best-value ones anywhere. It's a "go sooner rather than later," and a reminder that the same destination can be a very different deal from one year to the next.
What the firming baht actually means
Currencies mean-revert, and the baht has spent the last stretch clawing back ground. For an HKD traveller that doesn't make Thailand expensive β it makes it less of an outright steal than it was. The street-food-and-guesthouse Thailand of the record-cheap years is still there; it just no longer sits at the very bottom of its own price history. That's the whole logic of a value window: it doesn't slam shut, it narrows. The move is to spend the discount while a meaningful slice of it remains.
Which trips still deliver the best value
The value isn't spread evenly, so aim it well:
- Bangkok β still astonishing value for a world-class food and city-break destination. Street food, grand temples, rooftop bars and endless markets, with hotels far cheaper than any comparable Asian capital. This is where the baht move bites least, because the base is so low.
- Chiang Mai β the northern cultural heart, cheaper and calmer than the beaches. Old-city temples, night bazaars, cooking classes, and the surrounding hills. Your money stretches furthest here.
- The quieter islands over the overexposed ones β skip the flagship party beaches, whose prices have climbed with the crowds, and point at the calmer Andaman and Gulf coasts and the smaller islands. Same postcard water, far less markup.
The pleasures that still cost next to nothing
Whatever the currency does, Thailand's everyday pleasures stay cheap. A plate of pad thai or a bowl of boat noodles from a street stall is a few HKD; green curry, som tam and mango sticky rice are the taste of the trip and cost almost nothing. Beyond the plate: a Thai massage for pocket change, a temple morning, a longtail boat between islands, a cooking class in Chiang Mai. These are the experiences that make Thailand feel generous, and none of them has been priced out.
Go now, or wait?
Here's the honest framing. If Thailand is a maybe on your list, the currency argument says go this year β the tailwind that made it a runaway steal is fading, not gone, and every quarter trims it a little further. If you've been recently and are weighing it against a destination sitting at a genuine low, that's a fair reason to point elsewhere this round and come back later. Value is a when question, not just a where question, and Thailand's when is quietly shifting.
None of this dims what Thailand is: warm, welcoming, delicious, and still one of Asia's best trips, full stop. It just means the cleanest-value years are the ones behind and immediately ahead of us, not indefinitely out in front. Track exactly where it sits on the Thailand page, or see how its cities rank on our food destinations β then book while the window's still open.
