Airport Express group tickets: compare the full transfer cost
October 20, 2026 · TripDipUpdated: October 20, 2026
Compare official two-, three- and four-person fares, then add station access costs. A worked example shows when a cheaper Airport Express ticket costs more overall.
Estimate your trip budget
For two to four people travelling together, an Airport Express group ticket can reduce the rail portion of a Hong Kong airport transfer. But the cheapest station fare is not necessarily the cheapest journey from your home or hotel. Compare the group ticket plus the cost of reaching the station with a complete door-to-door alternative.
This guide was checked on 20 October 2026. It covers the current offer, not a newly announced fare cut.

Current group prices: read the total first
MTR's Airport Express group-ticket page lists these single-journey totals between the named station and Airport Station, in either direction. These are prices for the whole group, not each traveller. The group offer does not cover AsiaWorld-Expo Station.
| Station | Two people | Three people | Four people |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hong Kong | HK$170 | HK$230 | HK$280 |
| Kowloon | HK$150 | HK$210 | HK$250 |
| Tsing Yi | HK$100 | HK$140 | HK$170 |
For four people, the corresponding per-person costs are HK$70, HK$62.50 and HK$42.50. For three people, divide the total by three; rounded per-person amounts should not replace the group's actual payment.
MTR requires the group to buy in the same transaction and travel together. Purchase at the designated Airport Express station for departure from that station; the tickets are valid on the issue date and are non-refundable. The offer is listed as valid until further notice. Check the linked terms before buying, particularly if your friends may arrive separately.
Do not compare against the wrong individual fare
MTR's separate ticket types and fares page distinguishes payment methods, adult and child fares, and return products. A group total should be compared with the individual tickets your party would actually use, rather than a convenient but inapplicable headline fare.
For example, the published adult Octopus single-journey fares are HK$120 from Hong Kong, HK$105 from Kowloon and HK$73 from Tsing Yi. For four adults, multiplying those fares by four gives HK$480, HK$420 and HK$292. Against the group totals above, the rail-only differences are HK$200, HK$170 and HK$122 respectively.
These are calculations from the two MTR tables, not a promise of the best available deal. They exclude station access, other promotions and any concessions. Families should check the appropriate child fares before assuming the adult comparison applies to everyone.
The station-access test
Use this simple calculation for the entire party:
Rail option = group ticket + all paid transport needed to reach the departure station or leave the arrival station.
Then compare it with the total for the same people, luggage, origin and destination by another mode. When obtaining a taxi or transfer estimate, check what it includes and whether the vehicle suits your party. This article does not quote a taxi fare.
Here is a deliberately hypothetical four-person example. Only the group-ticket prices are official; the access costs are assumed to demonstrate the method.
| Option | Group ticket | Assumed access cost for everyone | Combined cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hong Kong Station | HK$280 | HK$0 | HK$280 |
| Kowloon Station | HK$250 | HK$50 | HK$300 |
| Tsing Yi Station | HK$170 | HK$140 | HK$310 |
In this example, choosing the lowest rail fare produces the highest total. It does not establish that Hong Kong Station is best for your address.
The difference between the four-person Hong Kong and Tsing Yi group tickets is HK$110. Therefore, Tsing Yi's rail saving disappears if reaching it costs your group more than HK$110 extra compared with reaching Hong Kong Station. At exactly HK$110 extra, the monetary totals tie; time, luggage handling and convenience still differ.
Add time without pretending the train starts at your front door
MTR advertises about 24 minutes between Hong Kong Station and the airport. That is the train journey, not the whole transfer. Add your journey to the station, meeting time, ticket purchase, waiting and walking to the airline's required location.
For departure planning, work backwards from your airline's check-in and boarding requirements. For arrival planning, allow for immigration and baggage collection before making a firm meeting arrangement. We have not measured queues or predicted road traffic.
Use this decision table once you have actual costs:
| Your situation | What deserves the most attention |
|---|---|
| Everyone starts near the same Airport Express station | The applicable group total and individual-ticket alternatives |
| Friends start in different districts | Separate access costs and the practicality of meeting before purchase |
| A distant station has a lower group fare | Whether the extra access cost exceeds the rail saving |
| The group has several large cases or limited mobility | Walking, lifts, vehicle suitability and the number of transfers |
| Return dates differ | Price each direction separately rather than assuming the group remains together |
Three common questions
Can we buy together and take different trains?
The group offer requires travelling together. If you need independent departures, compare suitable individual products instead.
Is the group fare automatically applied when everyone taps a card?
Do not assume so. The offer has a specific purchase process; use MTR's group-ticket instructions rather than treating separate gate payments as a group transaction.
Should we always board at Tsing Yi because the ticket is cheaper?
No. Apply the access-cost test to your actual starting points. A lower rail fare can be outweighed by the additional trip needed to reach that station.
Put the transfer into the whole-trip plan
Record the full airport-transfer cost in the trip budget planner, then compare it with the rest of your trip rather than treating it as an isolated discount. For a local outing after arrival, our Hong Kong Wine & Dine Festival budget guide separates admission from other spending. If your flight is disrupted, the Hong Kong flight-delay guide addresses a separate question: your airline options and evidence.
Sources and method: MTR's group-ticket terms and fare tables linked above were checked on 20 October 2026. MTR is the authoritative source for its own offer; these pages are not independent corroboration. All amounts are HKD. Access costs in the worked example are assumptions, while differences and per-person amounts are TripDip calculations. No taxi quote, guaranteed saving or current seat availability is claimed.
