Shinkansen luggage rules: measure your case and reserve the right seat

Check the oversized luggage threshold, avoid confusing shared racks with reserved space, and compare carrying, repacking or sending your suitcase separately.

Shinkansen luggage rules: measure your case and reserve the right seat

Travelling between Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka with a large suitcase? Measure it before booking the train. For ordinary luggage on the Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu and Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen, a total length + width + height over 160 cm and up to 250 cm requires a seat with an oversized baggage area. This guide, checked on 16 October 2026, helps you choose a workable booking rather than discover a storage problem on the platform. JR Central's luggage rules

Measure the packed case, not its marketing size

Record all three outer dimensions of the packed suitcase, allowing for protruding wheels and handles. Do not use a label such as “28-inch suitcase” as your calculation: it does not give all three dimensions. Re-measure after opening an expansion zip.

The examples below are TripDip's arithmetic, not measurements of a named suitcase or a guarantee of acceptance. JR Central lists luggage up to 160 cm separately from oversized baggage and does not allow luggage exceeding 250 cm. Other limits, including weight, length and permitted contents, still apply; check the operator rules before travelling.

Example outer dimensionsSumPlanning decision for an ordinary suitcase
75 × 48 × 30 cm153 cmBelow the oversized threshold; still plan where it will fit
78 × 50 × 32 cm160 cmAt the boundary: measure carefully, not approximately
80 × 52 × 33 cm165 cmReserve the oversized baggage seat option
110 × 85 × 60 cm255 cmDo not plan to bring this case aboard

Being under the threshold is not a promise that a heavy case will be easy to lift or comfortable beside your legs. Make the storage decision with the person who will actually carry it.

Shared storage does not cancel the reservation rule

JR West's current notice describes a trial, starting 1 July 2025, making some deck compartments available without prior reservation. The same notice explicitly retains the reservation requirement for oversized baggage. Do not interpret a photograph of an empty shared rack as permission to skip your booking.

JR West also lists a ¥1,000 fee, including tax, when oversized baggage is brought aboard without a reservation, with storage directed by a crew member. Treat this as a consequence to avoid, not a paid alternative that guarantees space. This is not a new fee announced today.

Book the baggage option, then check the actual seat

The official SmartEX booking guide tells travellers to select the oversized baggage area seat type and inspect the seat map. General availability for a train does not establish availability for that seat type. On connecting journeys, reserve the required option for the whole trip.

Use this checklist before confirming payment:

  1. Write down the packed suitcase dimensions and every train segment.
  2. Select the baggage seat option, not simply an ordinary reserved seat.
  3. Check each segment's seat assignment and keep the confirmation accessible offline.
  4. If the required option is unavailable, compare another departure before fixing a timed activity after arrival.
  5. If you change trains or dates, check the baggage arrangement again rather than assuming it follows automatically.

For purchases at a staffed ticket counter, bring your measurements and ask staff to confirm the appropriate seat and storage. Do not rely solely on a translated seat number or a third-party booking label.

Compare alternatives without inventing a delivery price

JR Central says that reserving this baggage area adds no charge compared with the equivalent ordinary-car or Green-car reserved seat. That does not mean every ticket product costs the same as a non-reserved ticket. Compare the total ticket price you can actually book.

JNTO's luggage guide identifies delivery and storage services as alternatives. Before sending a case, obtain a quote for your exact route and size, confirm the receiving hotel's arrangements, and check the promised delivery date. Keep essentials with you.

OptionInformation needed before choosingMain trade-off
Carry the case with a suitable reservationActual seat availability and total ticket priceYou keep the case but handle it during transfers
Choose another departureRevised arrival time and any booking-change costsA workable luggage booking may change the day's itinerary
Send the case separatelyDelivery quote, acceptance rules and confirmed arrival dateLess carrying, but time without the case
Pack into a smaller caseNew measured dimensions and what you can leave behindSimpler luggage handling, less packing capacity

Our decision method is to compare ticket + delivery/storage + any extra transfer costs, then assess arrival time and physical effort separately. We have not priced a delivery service or assigned a monetary value to your time. A cheaper-looking ticket is not a saving if it leaves you with an unusable luggage plan.

Quick questions

Does every Japanese train use this reservation system?

No. This guide covers the named Shinkansen services. Check the operator for other routes rather than applying this system nationwide.

Can I use any empty space behind the last row?

Do not assume so. Follow your confirmed luggage allocation and ask staff if uncertain; another passenger may have reserved that space.

Does a rail pass settle the luggage question?

No: pass value and seat/storage arrangements are separate decisions. Our Japan Rail Pass comparison addresses the first; confirm the second for your actual train.

Fit the train day into the wider trip

Use the Tokyo trip budget example to separate accommodation, food and transport, and the Japan destination guide when comparing the overall trip. Add confirmed luggage-service costs to your trip budget plan; that tool is not a rail-seat availability checker.
