Taiwan HSR early-bird tickets: deadlines, fares and real savings
October 21, 2026 · TripDipUpdated: October 21, 2026
Check Taiwan High Speed Rail early-bird deadlines and fares, then use a two-person cost calculation to decide whether a cheaper departure is worth changing your plans.
Estimate your trip budget
Taiwan High Speed Rail early-bird tickets suit travellers who can commit to a specific departure. 65折 means paying 65% of the fare—a 35% discount, not 65% off. Compare the available ticket price with the cost of changing your plans; the biggest advertised discount is not guaranteed. This guide was checked on 21 October 2026 against the operator's early-bird rules and fares.

Read the deadline as a calendar date
THSR's example is clear: for travel on 1 September, book by 28 August inclusive to have a chance of an early-bird fare. Bookings from 29 August onward do not qualify in that example. The operator counts the travel day within its five-day rule. For your own journey, note the actual cutoff date rather than treating “five days” as a rolling 120-hour promise. See the Chinese rules and dated example.
Check the table covering your travel date, too. The October 2026 ordinary early-bird table explicitly excludes 8–12 and 23–27 October. That is a limit on this table's coverage, not evidence that every train on those dates has no discount. Use the applicable holiday information and booking result instead.
Compare actual discount tiers
These are published one-way adult standard-car reserved-seat prices, in New Taiwan dollars (NT$). They are fare-table values, not a claim that seats are available now. Source: THSR early-bird fare charts.
| Route | 65折: 35% off | 8折: 20% off | 9折: 10% off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Taipei–Taichung | NT$455 | NT$560 | NT$630 |
| Taipei–Zuoying | NT$965 | NT$1,190 | NT$1,340 |
The departure-time tradeoff: an original worked example
Suppose two adults find Taipei–Taichung tickets at NT$630 each at their preferred time, or NT$455 each at a less convenient time. The maximum extra spending justified by switching is NT$350 for the pair: 2 × (630 − 455). This is a comparison between two early-bird tiers, not a saving against full fare.
| Extra cost caused only by switching | Pair's rail saving | Net cash saving |
|---|---|---|
| NT$0 | NT$350 | NT$350 |
| NT$200 | NT$350 | NT$150 |
| NT$400 | NT$350 | −NT$50 |
The extra-cost figures are assumptions, not transport or hotel quotes. Include only costs created by the switch: for example an additional transfer, paid storage or another night. Do not subtract a meal you would buy either way. Time also matters: saving NT$150 may be unattractive if it removes your only free afternoon.
For Taipei–Zuoying, the same two-person comparison gives 2 × (1,340 − 965) = NT$750. Repeat the calculation with the actual prices shown for your passengers. No exchange-rate conversion is used here.
Before paying
Early-bird quotas vary by train; booking early does not ensure the cheapest tier. A multi-ticket order needs enough discounted seats for the requested quantity. These tickets are personal, with passenger ID/passport details required; carry the matching original identification. Changes can reprice the journey, so do not buy a departure you already expect to change. Source: THSR purchase and change conditions.
Keep a simple decision record: travel date and stations, acceptable departure times, displayed total for everyone, extra costs, passenger details and payment deadline. This makes the final comparison reproducible without assuming tomorrow's inventory will match today's.
Three quick questions
Is 65折 an extra discount on a child ticket?
No: early bird covers adult standard-car reserved tickets. Compare the appropriate child concession separately using THSR's ticket-type guide.
Is this the same as a tourist rail pass?
No. THSR lists early bird and its foreign-passenger pass products separately in the ticket-type guide. Compare the journeys you actually need and each product's conditions.
Should I change cities to use a cheaper ticket?
Only after comparing the whole itinerary. A discounted train should support your trip, not create an unnecessary hotel night. Start with the Taiwan destination overview and record the resulting total in the trip budget planner. Our Airport Express cost comparison applies the same extra-cost test to airport access; the Tokyo Subway Ticket guide explains a different decision, pass versus individual fares.
